PM Modi Unveils National Drugs-Free Youth Campaign: Key Focus Areas and Objectives

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has initiated the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ which is a national campaign meant to safeguard the youth of India from the menace of substance abuse and develop a prosperous India in 2047. This campaign requires collaboration amongst students, parents, teachers, educational institutions, and the community at large in order to create a drug-free nation. Over one crore youth is said to have pledged against drugs during the initiation of this campaign.
What Is the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat’ Campaign?
The campaign is a national-level youth movement that aims to generate awareness about the adverse impacts of drugs on health and encourages young Indians to lead a healthy lifestyle.
The programme will be rolled out through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, where MY Bharat will conduct month-long activities at various universities and colleges in the country. It is an anti-drug awareness programme that also promotes citizenship among young people who can serve as drug-free ambassadors of India.
Why Was the Campaign Launched?
During the launch of the programme, the Prime Minister Modi said that Indian youth is the biggest strength of the country and plays an important role in fulfilling the objective of Viksit Bharat.
The Prime Minister added that drug addiction not only ruins the lives and career of the individuals but also the family and society. Further, he said that drug trafficking is being increasingly employed by the hostile countries to sabotage the country’s future.
Focus on Parents, Teachers and Families
Another important theme of the campaign is the importance of the family and educational institutions in this context.
Prime Minister Modi has encouraged parents and teachers to keep an open dialogue with the child and adolescent, rather than ignore or hide the case of addiction due to the social stigmatization. Young people battling addiction need to be given proper medical care, emotional and counseling support, and not isolation.
As per the Prime Minister, making a friendly environment at home and in educational institutions is one of the most effective means of prevention of drug abuse.
Objectives of the Campaign
One of the important objectives of the campaign is to increase awareness amongst young people regarding the hazards of drug addiction and encourage physical fitness, mental health, and good citizenship.
Another objective is to promote the involvement of community in the form of educational institutions, youth organizations, volunteers, and local communities in awareness campaigns. The government hopes to achieve behavioral change among young Indians through the means of workshops, pledge ceremony, interaction sessions, and outreach programs.
Youth Participation at the Centre
Youth plays an important role in the fight against drugs through this campaign.
It is expected that the students, youth activists, and institutions of higher learning should arrange awareness programs, debates, and other community events throughout the campaign period. In addition, the youth icons and local leaders shall be involved in encouraging the students to shun the practice of substance abuse.
Linkage With Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan
The new campaign is linked with the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) which was initiated by the government in 2020.
As per reports from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the campaign has successfully reached out to more than 29 crore people of India through awareness programs and other initiatives.
Why the Campaign Matters
Drug addiction has continued to remain a challenge to social, economic, and health wellbeing of different regions within India.
Research has indicated that prevention through awareness, counseling, family and early intervention is usually more beneficial as compared to when treatment is sought for substance abuse. The strategy therefore seeks to prevent substance abuse among students, colleges and young citizens in general.
The campaign also fits well within the general objectives of the government which include having a healthy and productive young population that can help realize its development objectives.
