OpenAI Employee Arrested for Secretly Installing Audio Recording Device in Conference Room

An OpenAI engineer has been taken into custody in the US on charges of secretly installing a voice recorder in the conference room of the executive floor in the company’s San Francisco premises. Abdulrahman Alfozan, the alleged offender, 35 years old and a Saudi national, was an OpenAI engineer who started working at the firm in July 2025.
The arrest came on October 13, 2026, when the US Department of Justice indicted him for attempting interception of private oral communication. It came to light that the voice recorder had been found by the company’s security department in the conference room during a security check on September 30.
How Was the Hidden Recording Device Discovered?
According to the criminal complaint, employees at OpenAI detected a listening device in the USB slot at the back of a TV in the executive conference room. The device had apparently been covered with toilet paper and was said to have been placed in the conference room around September 28.
The executive conference room had been used by executives to discuss their business information, research work, products, and strategies.
According to the complaint, Alfozan had used the company’s internal productivity application to search for information regarding the office location, scheduling of meeting rooms, movements and meetings with external partners.
Moreover, investigators claimed that a second listening device similar to the one detected in the conference room had been found in the possession of the accused. Surveillance video footage was said to show that he entered the room after discovering the first listening device and searched behind the TV.
OpenAI Says No Evidence of Sensitive Data Theft
OpenAI revealed that they were able to identify the device and conduct an investigation into its origins using internal artificial intelligence software and pass it on to the federal authorities.
The firm explained that it was unable to find any proof that suggested that the employee had gained unauthorized access to or distributed the model weights, source code, and customer data of the firm. The FBI investigation is still going on.
This case has highlighted the issues of insider threats in the artificial intelligence industry since valuable information could be included in their research and development.
Legal Proceedings and Potential Penalties
Arrested on October 9, he appeared before the federal court on October 13. He has been charged with a federal offense that deals with the use or the attempt to use an electronic or mechanical device to intercept oral communication.
The maximum penalty he may receive in prison upon conviction is five years imprisonment, a maximum fine of $250,000 and supervised release. This is possible penalty, but not a sentence imposed by the court yet.
A person is considered innocent until proven guilty. In his defense, the lawyer advised not to make judgments without knowing everything about the case.
The investigations would look into how the installation took place, recording and transmission of the conversation, and other devices used, if there were. It shows the significance of physical security, employee access controls and surveillance in organizations dealing with sensitive technology research.
