According to local media reports on Saturday, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir which is ruled by India were looking into a mysterious ailment that has killed 17 people. Since early December, 13 children have died in the isolated village of Badhaal in the Rajouri region of Jammu.
The community was designated a containment zone earlier this week and some 230 residents were placed under quarantine. According to Amarjeet Singh Bhatia, the head of the government medical college in Rajouri, all of the deceased suffered from brain and nervous system injury.
With health minister Jitendra Singh leading the investigation, the federal government has stated that the deaths were “not due to any infection, virus or bacteria but rather a toxin” according to the preliminary findings.
“There is a long series of toxins being tested. I believe a solution will be found soon. Additionally, if there was any mischief or malicious activity, that is also being investigated,” Jitendra Singh Said.
