Election Commission of India: Independence Under Scrutiny on National Voters’ Day

On National Voters’ Day, the Election Commission of India receives intense condemnation from Congress regarding its diminishing independence while its included constitutional purpose becomes questionable. Jairam Ramesh from Congress served as the general secretary to claim the Election Commission of India used recent decisions to create “mockeries against the Constitution” while showing disrespect to the voters.
According to Ramesh, the Election Commission of India created by Sukumar Sen alongside other key electoral leaders including TN Seshan plays a vital role. The Commission faces a compromised position because of the close political ties Prime Minister Narendra Modi shares with Home Minister Amit Shah according to Jairam Ramesh.
The critique appeared during National Voters’ Day celebrations on its 15th anniversary since the Election Commission of India began operations on January 25, 1950. According to the Congress party, the constitutional body has lost its independence due to a reported Supreme Court review of various recent decisions.
