Jaipur Internet Shutdown Explained: Why Mobile Internet Was Suspended for 24 Hours Across Parts of the City

Citizens in various parts of Jaipur got a rude shock in the morning after realizing that all mobile internet services had been halted for 24 hours.
The decision to ban mobile internet services and social media came on the instruction of the Jaipur administration in view of an impending anti-encroachment campaign to be conducted by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA). Law and order and spread of rumors were the two major reasons cited for taking such action.
This ban is one of the biggest bans to affect internet services in Jaipur since the beginning of the year.
Why Was the Internet Suspended?
As per the directives given by the concerned authorities, the ban was put in place before an extensive drive against any form of encroachment that was to take place on June 8.
A number of structures have been targeted by the Jaipur Development Authority for demolition. The structures that fall under the category of encroachments include a mosque, a mazar (a shrine), as well as two temples.
There were fears that social media sites may be misused by some elements in order to generate controversy and fuel any form of unrest among the masses.
Which Services Were Affected?
This was not just a mere internet slow down. The order placed restrictions on mobile internet services operating at 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G frequencies in the restricted areas. The restriction included messaging applications and social media services like WhatsApp, Facebook, X, SMS, and MMS applications. Voice calling services continued to be functional through the entire shutdown period.
Which Areas Were Impacted?
The blockade was done on a major part of Jaipur City and other police jurisdictions. Among the affected areas were parts of Jaipur North and Jaipur East Districts and various police station jurisdictions including Galta Gate, Manak Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Brahmpuri, Nahargarh, Kotwali, Jalupura, Shastri Nagar, Vidhyadhar Nagar, Bani Park, Vaishali Nagar, Jhotwara, Sanganer, Pratap Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Jawahar Circle, and other adjacent locations.
Due to the wide scope of the blockade, a lot of people faced disturbances while using online banking, making digital payments, booking rides, and accessing social media platforms.
Why Do Authorities Use Internet Shutdowns?
Both government and local authorities justify the need for suspension of internet services as a precautionary measure during such situations.
The key goal of such actions is to curb the swift dissemination of rumors and other forms of provocative content as well as to minimize any possibility of agitation against the administration.
The officials in Jaipur explained that the move was taken to ensure public peace in light of the ongoing anti-encroachment drive.
Why This Decision Has Sparked Debate
As per the explanations by governments, shutdowns of the Internet may be necessary to maintain peace; however, such shutdowns also lead to debates among citizens, businesses, and organizations concerned about digital rights.
According to critics, internet bans cause problems in people’s day-to-day activities, affect businesses, make online transactions impossible, and cause issues for students, tourists, and professionals.
Conversely, defenders state that such measures are useful to avoid an escalation in certain circumstances in case there is an expected level of miscommunication and unrest.
This debate has been revived once again due to the Jaipur internet shutdown.
When Will Services Resume?
Following the directive from the administration, the restriction started at the stroke of midnight on June 7 and should continue until midnight on June 8, lasting for a period of 24 hours.
Should no extension be issued by the authorities considering the ground situation, operations will begin again after the expiration of the restriction period.
What Should Residents Do During the Shutdown?
Residents have been told to remain calm and not circulate any rumors or misinformation until confirmed from credible sources. Digital users should plan their transactions beforehand, communicate through phone calls when possible, and seek confirmation through credible news outlets instead of rumors.

The Jaipur internet ban was implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure security before a crucial anti-encroachment operation concerning religious buildings and zones marked by the Jaipur Development Authority.
Though it may be argued that this is being done for the maintenance of law and order and prevention of misinformation, the issue yet again raises the question of striking a balance between public safety and the internet.
It should be noted that this 24-hour ban on mobile internet services in Jaipur does not concern any technical fault; rather, it is related to an important anti-encroachment activity.
