India-Armenia Relations Explained: Trade, Strategic Corridors and Growing Eurasian Ties

India and Armenia have developed a relation which has gone beyond diplomacy as far as scope is concerned. It is true that till now it has always been talked about in terms of a cordial bilateral relationship. However, today it is evolving into a relationship which is not only limited to economics but is going beyond that to include defence, trade, connectivity and technology as well as regional geopolitics.
It is all the more interesting because Armenia lies at a crucial junction between Europe, the Middle East and Eurasia while India is seeking alternative and dependable paths to markets outside of its immediate neighborhood. Recent talks have put emphasis on connectivity as well as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
Moreover, bilateral trade has been rather modest compared to India’s trade with its major trading partners.
Why India and Armenia Are Getting Closer
The bond has progressed due to the search by both nations of strategic and economic partnerships amid the fast-evolving Eurasian environment.
Armenia needs to increase its connectivity with other regions and diversify its external partnerships, while India has developed interest in the South Caucasus owing to its location between Europe, Central Asia, Iran, and Russia.
Thus, there has been found an important point of convergence. As per the High Commission of India in Nicosia, the interaction between India and Armenia has become multifaceted, where defense and connectivity have emerged as two important aspects along with trade, tourism, and energy.
Trade Between India and Armenia
There are few areas where there is room left to develop the existing relationship than trade.
As per the information provided by the Embassy of Armenia in India, the two-way trade figures for 2025 indicate that Armenia exported around $85.2 million worth of goods to India, while its imports from India stood at around $225.6 million by the country of origin basis. It can be clearly seen that there has been considerable growth in commercial activities compared to previous years.
The two countries conduct business in a wide variety of products. Exports from Armenia consist of precious & semi-precious stones, copper & copper articles, aluminum, chemicals, non-ferrous metals and rubber articles. Exports from India to Armenia include medicines, textile products, electronics, jewelry, industrial goods, rice, tea and other commodities.
This gives scope to the development of private sector linkages in the relationship.
Defence Cooperation Is Becoming a Major Pillar
Military matters have become among the most noticeable fields of cooperation between India and Armenia.
Indeed, Armenia is expanding its military ties while India is building up itself as an arms-producing country which can export such products. Thus, there appears to be a great deal of opportunity for cooperation in military technology and equipment.
For instance, according to the May 2026 speech from the Armenian Embassy in India, military-technical cooperation became one of the key elements of this relationship. In addition, Armenia’s ambassador pointed to the potential of synergy between Indian large-scale production and Armenia’s innovative technology.
At the same time, it is crucial to note that this relationship cannot be qualified as a military alliance. Armenia’s ambassador in particular stressed in May 2026 that India and Armenia had never declared themselves as a “strategic partnership” despite all similarities in the essence of their cooperation.
The Strategic Importance of the INSTC
Connectivity may be considered one of the key long-term economic aspects of India-Armenia ties.
The INSTC or International North-South Transport Corridor is aimed at developing a multimodal transport corridor connecting India via Iran and Caspian region countries to Russia and further markets.
As far as India is concerned, this route may become an alternative to conventional maritime ones and help develop its access to Eurasian markets. As for Armenia, taking part in larger connectivity efforts may help it establish itself as a transit and logistic hub in the South Caucasus region.
On September 18th, 2025 India, Armenia and Iran held their third trilateral talks and specifically focused on increasing their cooperation in terms of connectivity, the INSTC and Armenia’s “Crossroads of Peace” project, with Chabahar Port becoming one of its key parts.
Thus, the India-Armenia ties are not limited to trade between the two countries anymore but also include larger issues related to the movement of goods, energy and strategic resources throughout Eurasia.
What Is Armenia’s Crossroads of Peace?
Another major factor in Armenia’s connectivity is its “Crossroads of Peace” initiative.
This concept aims at strengthening the transport links between regions through the reopening and upgrading of transit routes through the South Caucasus region. Increased regional connectivity can provide India with an opportunity to access the markets of Europe and Eurasia.
India has shown approval towards the project but specifically focused on the north-south connectivity axis, which includes Iran and Armenia.
Greater accessibility of transport links can give Armenia a geographical advantage from an economic point of view.
Why the South Caucasus Matters to India
The South Caucasus is gaining significance due to its proximity to a number of major geopolitics and economics zones.
Armenia is surrounded by Iran, Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan and hence lies adjacent to the connections of Persian Gulf, Europe, Russia, and Central Asia.
For India, increased involvement in this area will enable it to build ties apart from its conventional partners and also develop multiple connectivity corridors.
This will be particularly significant in the context of vulnerability of the global supply chain to geopolitical uncertainties.
A Relationship Shaped by a Changing Eurasia
The relationship between India and Armenia is also taking place in the midst of major geopolitical shifts in Eurasia.
It is important to mention that Armenia has been trying to establish closer ties with Western organizations on one hand, but has at the same time continued to maintain ties with other countries including India and Iran. For example, in May 2026, Armenia entered into a strategic partnership deal with the US, indicating the change in the foreign policy environment of the country.
In the case of India, there are both challenges and opportunities created by this changing environment.
Why India’s Relationship With Armenia Is Different
India’s engagement with Armenia is an aspect of a larger policy of dealing with individual nations based on economic and strategic interests as opposed to looking at the entire South Caucasus region as a geopolitical entity.
The High Commission of India refers to India’s regional policy as one that is country-specific and multi-faceted, where Armenia becomes very significant for military and connectivity reasons and Azerbaijan and Georgia have their own economic and strategic importance.
What Comes Next for India-Armenia Relations?
However, the future of this relationship will depend on whether the good relations between India and Armenia can be turned into bigger business and connectivity projects.
There is plenty of room for growth in trade, defense ties have started developing, and connectivity programs may bring economic benefits if transport networks in the region get integrated better.
The problem is that multi-national infrastructure projects need political stability, funding, and cooperation. Thus, the success of corridors such as the INSTC and Crossroads of Peace will be defined by India and Armenia, as well as developments in other regional countries, including Iran.

Conclusion
This relationship seems to be moving into a more strategic stage. Defence cooperation has become one of the main pillars of this relationship, while trade, technology and connectivity have made India-Armenia relations move into new directions.
Probably, the key aspect of the emerging relationship is the emphasis on Eurasian connectivity. With the help of the INSTC, Chabahar and the Crossroads of Peace initiative of Armenia, India and Armenia are developing the means to link their economies better to the larger Eurasian region.
Thus, the relationship does not look like diplomatic relations between friendly states anymore. On the contrary, the emerging relationship is based on trade routes, strategic autonomy, defence cooperation and Indian economic presence in Eurasia.
India and Armenia are creating a complex relationship based on defence, trade and connectivity, with the South Caucasus region becoming an important component of India’s Eurasian policy.
