Green Diwali Campaign 2026 Launched by WWF-India and MoEFCC to Promote Eco-Friendly Celebrations

WWF India, along with MoEFCC (Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change), has started a ‘Green Diwali Campaign 2026’ in India for the promotion of eco-friendly Diwali celebrations. This campaign was launched on October 20 and will be continuing till November 8 and calls upon people to not use firecrackers during this time in accordance with the Mission LiFE of the government.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of environmental issues among households, students, and communities, and to take steps to reduce pollution and waste associated with Diwali. It places special emphasis on the 130 cities under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
Key Objectives of Green Diwali Campaign 2026
The campaign intends to make environmental consciousness an integral part of Diwali celebrations. Firecrackers may cause additional air and noise pollution since it becomes difficult for pollutants to disperse if weather conditions do not allow this to happen.
Various schools, colleges, educational institutes, residential welfare associations and other communities shall be engaged as a part of the campaign and shall be encouraged to conduct various awareness drives, pledge drives, processions and meetings for creating more eco-consciousness.
What Is the Green Diwali Pledge?
As a part of the campaign, people are expected to make the Green Diwali Pledge and convince their families and neighbors to adopt eco-friendly ways.
This includes making sure that one avoids bursting firecrackers, uses eco-friendly diyas and lights, reduces plastic waste, segregates household waste and opts for products made locally.
These actions help ensure that pollution levels are low and that responsible consumption takes place. Opting for local products is beneficial for artisans and local businesses as well.
Carbon Footprint Survey and Community Participation
The WWF-India has also been encouraging people to take part in the Carbon Footprint Survey conducted by them. This survey would help in creating awareness among people regarding how their lifestyle and consumption patterns impact the environment and how they could become more sustainable.
The school, colleges, EIACP centers, communities and individuals taking part in the campaign can submit their activities through the online submission form. This submission form should consist of organization’s name, location, details of activities, date, number of people who have taken the pledge, geo-tagged photos and a short report.
Some of these submissions may also get published on EIACP website and social media handles.
Why Does the Campaign Matter?
The “Green Diwali” campaign demonstrates how personal and communal efforts can lead to environmental consciousness. Refraining from using firecrackers, reducing the use of disposable plastics and properly disposing of waste can be ways to ensure the minimum environmental burden of festivities.
Nevertheless, sustainable improvement of air quality will necessitate adequate pollution control, clean transportation and environmental standards enforcement.
Thanks to its national campaign, WWF-India and MoEFCC motivate people to celebrate Diwali while considering the environment. The event will be held until November 8, 2026.
