E-Commerce Inside Chatbots: How Native Gemini Purchasing Will Disrupt India’s Digital Marketplace

There is over a decade long history of Indian e-commerce where the consumer has been conditioned to browse through products using a certain pattern: open the app, search for a product, compare offers, check reviews, put in the cart, and make payment. This paradigm is about to undergo a radical transformation.
The next generation of e-commerce could begin not from an e-commerce app but from a conversation.
Google’s move towards native shopping experiences on Gemini will usher in a time when the consumer can discover, compare, and possibly purchase a product without switching to an e-commerce app. This could be a significant shift in the way that the consumer discovers brands and how businesses compete in terms of visibility, in the Indian context where digital payments and conversational search have already become a part of daily life.
From Search Results to Shopping Conversations
Traditional search involved the matching of keyword searches with web pages, product listings and ads. It was left to the consumer to compare the matches.
AI shopping assistants do things differently.
Rather than search for “the best running shoes under ₹5,000,” the consumer could say to the AI bot, “I run five kilometres every morning and have flat feet, looking for comfortable running shoes under ₹5,000.” The AI will understand the intent, filter and perhaps even prompt a purchase.
That is the key difference.
No more surfing through tens of websites. The chatbot is the interface for the customer’s shopping experience.
In addition to the potential ease of product discovery, it means a new battlefield for brands: selection through AI instead of mere search engine listings.
Why India Could Be a Major Testing Ground
India is well on its way towards laying down all of the groundwork needed for conversational commerce.
The consumers are quite familiar with mobile first commerce, mobile payments, and mobile transaction methods. UPI has made online transactions more and more frictionless. Platforms from marketplaces to social media have made the line between content, discovery and commerce very thin.
With AI shopping, an additional element could be added to this environment.
It would be possible for a consumer to discover an item, ask questions about it, consider other alternatives, and move towards checkout without having to switch between multiple platforms.
This would be particularly useful for Indian consumers because in their shopping process, there are numerous parameters that must be considered. These include price, delivery location, language, availability of the product, and money’s worth.
The Biggest Change: Search Rankings May No Longer Be Enough
The greatest impact on brands could come from the evolving meaning of visibility.
For many years now, businesses have been spending huge sums of money on SEO to rank their products on the first page of Google. The product pages have been optimized based on keywords, backlinks, speed, and search intent.
However, conversational commerce presents an additional challenge: will AI systems understand and recommend my product when a customer asks for it?
This is where traditional SEO might start to converge with AI-specific SEO.
The brand might require product information which is structured and can be understood by AI systems. Price, specs, availability, reviews, policies, and use cases will become more and more important since the AI system would need accurate data to make its recommendation.
Put differently, the product page will not only be for the people and crawlers anymore. It might be optimized for AI agents as well.
Product Data Could Become the New Digital Shelf
Traditional physical stores know the significance of shelf placement. Visibility at eye-level height can determine buying decisions.
The online equivalent has been search rankings.
For an AI-enabled environment, product data might just be the new shelf.
Since an AI assistant has to decide which products to recommend to consumers, poorly structured data may diminish the brand’s competitive edge.
A smartphone seller, for instance, would not only have to provide the name and image but also all the necessary details concerning specifications, compatibility, pricing, warranty, availability, shipping, and customer sentiments.
The better the structure of the data, the easier it becomes for the AI to determine where a product belongs.
The Rise of Agentic Commerce
This is not just about AI making recommendations for the users. This represents the gradual process of moving towards agentic commerce, where the AI will be able to carry out more of the shopping experience on behalf of the consumers.
At present, the consumers take all their own purchase decisions. In future, the AI assistant will be able to undertake research, comparison, and perhaps transactions based on instructions given by the user.
This would mean something like telling the AI, “Give me a laptop below Rs. 70,000 with 16GB RAM, good battery life and deliver by Friday.”
AI would be able to do the necessary research, comparison and offer the best options based on those parameters.
In this scenario, the consumer’s role would be of a decision-maker rather than a researcher.
What Happens to Traditional E-Commerce Platforms?
This doesn’t mean that marketplaces go away.
Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra and other platforms continue to offer huge value in terms of inventory, logistics, payments, customer support and fulfillment.
However, the dynamics of consumer interaction with such platforms can be different.
Consumers will no longer initiate interaction within the shopping platform but will start interacting with an AI assistant that will lead to their discovery of the inventory on these platforms.
In that case, the key competitive advantage can lie in the hands of someone who controls the first interaction with the consumer in their shopping journey.
Small Businesses Could Gain a New Route to Customers
It may also give smaller Indian companies a chance to shine.
Currently, smaller brands face challenges in competing with already well-established firms who have more money to spend on advertisements.
If AI assistants become more involved in the process of selecting products in terms of their relevance, quality, pricing, reviews, and information availability, then it will be easier for smaller brands to reach out to consumers without spending large amounts of money on advertisement.
However, there is one condition attached to this challenge.
Trust Will Become the Biggest Challenge
With the increase in the role of AI in the purchase process, trust plays an increasingly crucial role.
Consumers would like to understand why AI has favored a particular product over other products. At the same time, brands would want to ensure transparency in their product selection process. The regulators would also need to look at advertising, sponsored recommendations, consumer protection, and accountability.
The issue is not just about whether the AI can suggest a product.
It is about whether consumers can trust that suggestion.
India’s E-Commerce Playbook Is About to Change
Inherent purchasing within chatbots is essentially the transition from e-commerce based on websites and applications into one that is based on the intention and conversation.
The customer states their desires. The machine translates the desire into something tangible. Product options are then assessed against the needs of the consumer. The process becomes increasingly conversational.
For Indian companies, it means that the next level of digital commerce won’t be gained merely through advertisements and traditional search engine optimization.
The other way in which success can be achieved is through the visibility of your brand in artificial intelligence space, accurate information about products, and becoming the answer to the consumer query “What should I buy?”
The digital marketplace in India has been evolving for decades from physical stores to websites, websites to applications, and applications to marketplaces.
The next evolution may be that of transitioning from marketplaces to AI-based commerce.
When shopping interface transforms into a chatbot, the most relevant search result would no longer be the link, but rather the product that artificial intelligence decides to show you.
