Former UPA Minister Jitin Prasada joins BJP ahead of 2022 UP polls
On Wednesday there was chaos in inner circle of Congress when former Union Minister and key figure in Congress Jitin Prasada quit the party and joined the BJP. Mr. Prasada’s induction took place at BJP’s national headquarters situated in New Delhi. The induction was carried out in presence of Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and BJP media cell in charge Anil Baluni,
Prasada said that he felt “he was unable to serve the interests of his people and society” while in Congress.
With upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh in 2022, Jitin Prasada joining BJP is a massive setback to Congress.
Piyush Goyal mentioned Prasad’s father, late senior Congress leader Jitendra Prasada, and said, “I have been watching Jitin Prasada for many years, he lost his father when he was quite young, but he took on the mantle, and decided to serve Uttar Pradesh, winning two Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2009. He has been diligent in his push for development of his constituency, lobbying hard with the government since 2014 for a railway project in the area.”

Addressing media after induction, Prasada described BJP as a “truly national” party that was standing for interest of the country. He said, “As for the Congress party, I left because I felt that if one is unable to serve one’s people or protect their interests being in a certain party, it is better to leave. Under the BJP and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I feel that I will be better able to serve my people.”
The 47 year old minister had won from Shahjahanpur and Dhaurahra Lok Sabha constituencies in 2004 and 2009, lost his seat in 2014 elections. Prasada was also one of the 23 ministers who had written to Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi in 2020 seeking changes in party’s organizational structure.
