BSNL to Launch 5G in Delhi by Mid-2025

The public sector in India is getting bold in its next chapter of the Indian telecom story. Preparation is already underway to launch 5G services by State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) with the capital city, Delhi, as its first 5G service roll-out point by mid-2025. This move has been long awaited, and it is expected to be a critical step towards BSNL becoming a major modern, competitive player in telecommunications with an extensive ₹61,000 crore spectrum allocation pour-in from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Unlike previous delays and setbacks, this time BSNL will have a much stronger base to build upon. The telecom operator currently has more than 83,000 4G sites across India, of which over 74,000 are operational. What makes this rollout all the more thrilling is that these towers are being built with indigenous technology and are already 5 G-upgradable. That means BSNL will not have to go through the pains of starting over, but can transition to 5G more efficiently and cost-effectively than ever before.
The revival strategy of BSNL has primarily banked on government support. It earlier sanctioned an additional ₹6000 crore in the financial year to assist in segregating capital expenses and boosting the expansion of the company’s 4G network. Indeed, from 2019 up to now, the aggregate financial support of both BSNL and MTNL has almost touched ₹3.22 lakh crore. It is not only funding; rather, it is a symbol of a great deal of confidence in the future of public sector telecom.
Tejas Networks, another Tata Group company, has been a crucial component in this transformation. Tejas provided equipment for 27,000 BSNL sites in the third quarter of FY25 alone, bringing its total contribution to over 86,000 deployments. This partnership is more than just numbers: it is about developing a telecom network that India can truly call its own, secure, and self-reliant.
