Bhutan Glacial Lake Outburst Triggers Flash Flood Alerts in West Bengal and Assam

Warnings have been issued by the government in West Bengal and Assam regarding reports of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in Bhutan, and there has been concern over a sudden rise in water levels of rivers that flow into India. This situation has prompted the disaster management departments to be on the lookout for any signs of flash floods in low-lying areas.
This warning is especially crucial for communities residing near the rivers in northern parts of West Bengal and western Assam.
What Is a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood?
A glacial lake outburst flood is caused by the sudden breakout of water that has collected in a lake created by melted glaciers due to the failure of a natural barrier that contains this water. These natural barriers might be made up of debris of glaciers, ice or both.
The flood that follows can carry huge quantities of water downstream together with stones and other material. This flood may move quickly through valleys, giving people little time to prepare.
Glacial lakes in Bhutan have become a major concern due to the geographical nature of Bhutan and the melting of glaciers there.
West Bengal and Assam on Alert
This recent threat has created some worries among the districts that are found in river basins which are linked to Bhutan. The northern districts of West Bengal need to be watched closely especially the ones near the river basins like the Teesta, Jaldhaka, and others.
In Assam, there could be dangers among communities living in the western districts should there be increased water levels downstream.
The district administrations and disaster management authorities need to monitor the river situations and issue any necessary warnings.
Residents living close to riverbanks have been urged to avoid crossing flooded streams, entering river channels or approaching bridges during periods of rapidly rising water.
Himalayan Communities Face Growing Flood Risks
Lake outburst flood is one of the deadliest types of natural disaster in the high altitude areas. The effects of this type of disaster may even be felt beyond the area where the lake bursts.
A case study to prove the point is that of South Lhonak Lake outburst disaster in Sikkim in 2023.
Precautionary Measures and Public Safety
It is essential for the authorities to ensure proper communication, river-level observation, and coordination among disaster management agencies in India and Bhutan.
People need to listen to instructions from the concerned authorities and prepare themselves for emergencies. The most pressing task is the prevention of loss of life and early warning to the people downstream in case of deteriorating conditions.
