Air Quality Deteriorates as Temperature Drops to 7°C
Second consecutive day of dense fog disrupted rail transport and low visibility flights in Delhi; AQI touched 350, ‘very poor’. At the Indira Gandhi International Airport, visibility further reduced to zero at Palam and 50 meters at Safdarjung, prompting CAT-III landing on all the three runways.
However, due to a great number of storms, the airport was not reported to divert or cancel flights; however, 306 flights were delayed, the average delay time was 18minutes on Thursday. The rail sector was not left out either, as at least 24 trains were above one hour behind schedule, as officials from the northern railway disclosed. IMD scientist RK Jenamani said that visibility was reduced to under 50 meters, and classified the fog as ‘very dense’.
In the capital, the temperature did not deviate too much from the average for this period, the lowest temperature was 7, slightly lower than the previous day’s 7.6, while the maximum temperature was forecast to be around 17. Dense fog, low temperatures, and the poor quality of air remain a persistence problem in the national capital while people’s lives.
