Vicky Kaushal’s Udham projects hatred towards British, says Oscars Jury members

UK -After having secured its position as one of the most sought-after films of 2021, it was expected that Vickey Kaushal starrer Sardar Udham will be India’s entry for the Oscars but one of the Jury members of the Academy Awards clarified that it will not be chosen.

On Monday, the Jury members stated that because of the hatred that it shows against the British is the reason why it will not be selected as India’s entry for the arguably the largest event for the movie industry. The film was released on one of the largest video streaming platforms Amazon Prime.

From the date of its release to now, the fim has received a lot of positive reviews for the projection of the heroic character of Sardar Udham as well the way Vickey Kasuhal played the title character.

The film has been directed by Shoojit Sircar who is also known for movies like Pink and Vickey Donor. Given the directing chops of Sircar and the acting part covered beautifully by Laushal, it was highly anticipated that it would make it as India’s official entry to scars however that does not seem to be the case.

A few days earlier, Tamil drama Koozhangal was announced by India’s entry for the star studded event after which fans expressed their disappointment over not selecting the movie as India’s representation.

To this, Indraadup Dasgupta explained the reason was not choosing the film war because they felt that ‘portrays our hatred towards the British’. While talking to a leading daily, Dasgupta said, “Sardar Udham is a little lengthy and harps on the Jallianwala Bagh incident.”

He also added that even though the attempt to make a film on an unsung hero is very honest but in a way it projects out hatred toward the Britishes. However, the Jury members definitely praised the film’s production quality and its cinematography. The film speaks about the life struggles of Sardar Udham Singh, who was a freedom fighter and is mostly known by people to have killed Michael O’Dwyer in retaliation for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He shot the British official at Caxton Hall in London while he was scheduled to speak at a joint meeting of the East India Association.
