The historical “Genome India Project” Launched by PM Narendra Modi?
India is a densely populated country with diverse genetics in the world and this new milestone in the research of biotechnology & genetics “Genome India Project” will play a crucial role in future. On Thursday, PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation virtually during the commencement of this project. The foundation for this project has been laid during the Covid-19 pandemic. Around 10,000 various genomes of the individuals across the nation have initially been included in the genetic resources which are available for the scientists, scholars and researchers to understand India’s genetic landscape. Further, the data is secured in the Indian Biological Data Center.
“Today, India has taken a truly historic step in the field of research. Five years ago, the Genome India Project was approved. Despite the challenges posed by Covid-19 during this period, our scientists have worked tirelessly to complete this project. The genomic data of 10,000 Indians is now available at the Indian Biological Data Centre. I am confident that this project will prove to be a milestone in the field of biotechnology” said PM Modi
