Hockey great Major Dhyan Chand has been honored for his exemplary contribution to the world of sports as the Prime Minister of India renamed India’s highest sporting honor Khel Ratna after the hockey legend.
The Indian prime minister tweeted, “I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views. Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award!”
The announcement seemed to be a gift for the country that was colored in blue after the men’s hockey team ended a 41-year wiat with a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and women’s team finished fourth with an heart winning effort at the Olympics. The women also managed to defeat Australia, which was considered to be a much more powerful team than the blue squad.
Many had earlier requested that the Khel Ratna should be renamed after the Hockey magician, a three time Olympic gold medalist. It is Dhyan Chand’s birthday on August 29, which is also the national sports day and now his name will also be associated with the highest sporting honor.
