Deepika Padukone is one of the leading actors of the Indian film industry, in fact, people regard her as the queen of the industry but still when it comes to the pay scale between her and leading men of the industry, Padukone seems to suffer.
The reported incident is of ‘Baiju Bawra’ where Deepika had asked for equal pay as her co-star and husband Ranveer Singh but instead, she has been dropped out for the same reason. This would have been the third film that Padukone and Singh have come together for along with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
A Bollywood news website said, “Apparently, Deepika wants the same remuneration as her husband. Not a penny more, not a penny less.” Deepika is on top among the actors who are fighting for pay parity in the industry and recent years have seen her demanding as much pay as her co-star but this time, her wish was not granted.
There are two male leads in the movie. Bhansali has been working for a long time now. It will be interesting to know who will be replacing Deepika after her removal. Another thing to notice here is the fact that Ranveer Singh joined the industry way later than Deepika and that gave the latter an edge.
Earlier a few directors had stated that the industry doesn’t believe in pay parity as the more experienced one gets a better deal. If this were to be true then it should have been Deepika getting more money than her co-stars but unfortunately, that has not been the case.
The source talked to Bollywood Hungama revealing that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is not upset or disappointed with her being dropped because he feels that they have already collaborated for three films prior to this and another movie with the same pairing will make ‘Excessive’.
