What made Money Heist so successful? Was it the plot or the cast?
Popular series on Netflix, Money Heist is on everyone’s mind. From its storyline to the suspense to a tremendous caste everything is grabbing the attention of many people and keeping them on their toes every second. But was it always this popular?
The straight answer to this would be a no. The series initially was a flop and the country where the series originated, did not give it full marks for the portrayal. But thanks to Netflix, it was capable of receiving all the love it has received till now. A new life was given to the show as soon as it started airing on the popular streaming platform.
With its history, it is difficult to imagine it being the biggest, most-watched show in history. Now its fans are anticipating the release of its fifth and final season which will bring in more twists and turns, as promised by the makers of the show, in the lives of the main characters.
Going back to the time it was released on Spanish TV ANtenna 3 in 2017, it was supposed to be a finite series distributed in two parts each containing 15 episodes. It was called La Casa De Papel but after coming on Netflix, it became ‘Money Heist’ and gained a lot of popularity because of it.
It may have started with a bang on television but soon, its viewership drastically fell. The result was so damaging that the creator of the show Alex Pina considered putting a full stop on the show’s airing and the writer Javier Gomez tagged the series a ‘flop’ even before anything was finalized from the side of the creators.
The cast and crew were informed about what the creators were thinking and in a documentary ‘The Phenomenon’, they revealed their feelings about parting ways after the final call was made. They said that they had put in a lot of hard work to the characters but it seemed not to resonate with the Spanish audience.
But things got better when after season two, it stopped airing on Spanish television and started its magic on Netflix. The American streaming platform acquired its global streaming rights and cut the series into smaller 22 episodes and named it ‘Money Heist’. In no time, the actors gained a lot of followers on social media and started becoming household names.
Fans were going crazy about the show and not just the show but the characters too, found their name everywhere they went. People had tattooed famous quotes, the characters, and their faces. As things kept going in its favor, the series was second on the IMDb rating for the most popular series.
