Cyclone Threat Looms Over Odisha Coast: IMD Forecasts Extremely Heavy Rainfall and High Alert

Odisha has been put on high alert following the formation of Cyclone Arnab over the Bay of Bengal, as forecasters from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have predicted extremely heavy rains in some parts of the state while warning about adverse weather conditions along the east coast. Even though the cyclone may hit neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, southern Odisha may witness heavy rains, strong winds and floods from October 27 to 29.
The IMD’s October 26 bulletin states that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal had intensified into Cyclone Arnab. The cyclone is expected to strengthen further before approaching the Andhra Pradesh coast on October 28.
Red Alert Issued for Southern Odisha Districts
Red Alert has been issued by the IMD for the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri. This is due to the possibility of very heavy rains in isolated places. Very heavy rains are expected in some parts of the Central and Western regions of Odisha.
There can be risks of flooding, landslides, flash floods, etc., owing to such heavy rains, especially in the hills and those areas which have a poor drainage system. There can also be problems in transportation on account of strong winds and thunderstorms.
People living in vulnerable areas have been advised to evacuate if told to do so.
Cyclone Arnab Expected to Approach Andhra Pradesh Coast
Arnab will become a very severe cyclonic storm prior to making landfall in the state of Andhra Pradesh between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on October 28 in the morning hours.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the wind speed will be between 115 to 125 kmph, whereas gusts will reach up to 140 kmph at landfall time. The center of the cyclone will move over Andhra Pradesh, but due to its closeness, Odisha will witness heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
Odisha Government Steps Up Preparedness
The Government of Odisha has organised the disaster management teams and asked the district administrators to be ready for any emergency that may arise.
Disaster management teams and the fire brigade are ready to help in evacuations, road clearance, and emergency aid.
Communication between local administrators and locals has been made compulsory by authorities.
The fishermen have been asked to stay away from those troubled areas in the sea. The ports located in the coastal region of Odisha have issued precautionary warnings owing to worsening sea conditions.
Safety Advisory for Residents
Citizens need to keep themselves updated about IMD bulletins and refrain from traveling when there is heavy rainfall and avoid going near flooded rivers, streams, and landslides. Citizens who live in risky areas must comply with evacuation orders and keep themselves well stocked with medicines and water.
There might be a change in the path and intensity of the rainfall of this cyclonic system as the weather system evolves further.
