NTA UGC-NET & NEET June 2026 Rules: 5 Mandatory Dress Code and Item Restrictions You Must Check Before Reaching the Centre

With lakhs of aspirants preparing for UGC-NET and NTA examinations, even one minor error on the day of the examination can cause delays, additional frisking, or even rejection from entering the examination venue.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been stressing stringent regulations concerning attire, footwear, jewelry, and banned items in examination centers. Although the exact requirements may differ according to the type of exam, the aim is common – to avoid any malpractice and ensure hassle-free security procedures.
Five important guidelines every candidate needs to verify before heading to the examination center.
Wear Simple and Light Clothing
Another directive commonly found in examinations by NTA is the avoidance of wearing cumbersome clothing.
Light-colored and plain clothes that do not have any form of heavy embroideries or metals on them should be preferred. Clothes that have heavy pockets and multiple layers should also be avoided. The reason for this is that such clothing allows for faster checking by the security team. Candidates should try and avoid cumbersome clothing.
Avoid Full Sleeves, Jackets and Layered Outfits
According to the guidelines of NTA for entrance exams, it has always been advised against wearing full sleeves or jackets or coats for the students appearing for the tests.
It is because wearing multiple layers can take a lot of time in terms of conducting searches during security checks. Students are thus advised to wear half-sleeved shirts, T-shirts, or Kurtas.
In case the candidates dress up in their traditional attire, they may be allowed but will need to come early.
Footwear Rules Are Stricter Than Most Students Expect
Most of the students are shocked when they come to know that wearing shoes is one of the highly monitored guidelines.
Wearing shoes, boots, and any type of heavy footwear is not encouraged and even banned in examination like NEET, where slippers or low-heeled sandals are usually favored. This is because it facilitates easier frisking of the examinees.
Therefore, it is recommended that candidates ensure that their footwear does not cause any problem at the entrance point.
Jewellery, Watches and Metallic Accessories Are Not Allowed
Metallic items along with accessories form some of the key restrictions.
Students should avoid wearing anything metallic such as rings, chains, earrings, bracelets, watches, fitness bands or metallic bracelets, waistbands, pins, or any other metallic accessory as they could easily activate the alarm system.
Even for the candidates appearing for the UGC-NET test, wearing simple clothing without any jewellery would be advisable.
Electronic Devices Can Lead to Immediate Disqualification
Undoubtedly, one of the most important rules involves electronic equipment. Cell phones, Bluetooth sets, calculators, smartwatches, digital watches, earphones, tablets, and communication devices are not allowed within examination halls. Using such devices may lead to punishment or even cancellation of candidature.
Only those things which have been stated explicitly in the admit cards should be taken by candidates to the examination venue.
What You Should Carry Instead
Although restrictions are stringent, it is anticipated that the candidate would be able to bring along all vital documents like the admit card, proper identification proof, and passport-sized photos if needed.
In case of certain exams, even a clear water bottle and any medically required equipment are allowed. However, this must be confirmed according to the guidelines provided.
Why NTA Has Become More Strict
In recent times, there have been stricter security measures to prevent impersonations, cheating, and use of any prohibited electronics by the examination boards.
The introduction of more thorough frisks, wearing of specific uniforms, and restriction on certain items is an attempt to maintain the integrity of high-stakes exams.
As such, harmless objects may be subject to closer scrutiny if they break the examination code.
