Nitin Gadkari Unveils Roadmap for India’s Highway Infrastructure at Chintan Shivir 2026

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, formally inaugurated the Chintan Shivir 2026 in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, where a detailed action plan was revealed in order to create a complete vision of transforming Indian highways infrastructure. Chintan Shivir 2026 was organized with the theme “Gatishakti se Pragati” and it witnessed the participation of Transport and Public Works Ministers of States along with other stakeholders.
While addressing the gathering, Gadkari said that in the next phase of development of highways in India, India needs to think about creating highways not only in terms of the length of roads but also in terms of quality, efficiency and sustainability of the construction process.
Stronger Project Planning at the DPR Stage
One of the key highlights of Gadkari’s roadmap was enhancing the process of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which according to him is the foundation for any good road project.
Gadkari stressed that surveying, alignment planning, land acquisition, utility shifting, and statutory clearances must all be done before the commencement of construction. According to Gadkari, good preparation in the planning stage will ensure that there will be no delay in the project, no cost overrun, and better construction. The minister encouraged implementing agencies to take an integrated approach towards planning.
Focus on Safer and Greener Highway Infrastructure
Safety on roads became another important pillar of discussion at Nitin Gadkari Chintan Shivir 2026.
The minister emphasized the importance of incorporating safety measures right from the initial phase of road planning rather than considering them as something to be taken care of later on. He also promoted the use of eco-friendly techniques and advanced technology in road construction.
India’s highway system must be not only fast and intelligent but also eco-friendly, said Gadkari.
Technology and Toll Reforms to Improve Travel
The plan also reflected the increasingly important use of technology in highway management.
Gadkari talked about initiatives like annual passes using FASTags, MLFF tolls, digital surveillance systems, and advanced project management systems to enhance traffic movement. These will help ensure smooth driving on highways and minimize congestion.
Technology governance will be critical in supporting the fast-growing road network of India, the minister said.
Centre-State Coordination to Drive Faster Development
One of the key aims of Chintan Shivir 2026 was to improve coordination between the central government and the state governments.
The conclave concentrated on exchanging good practices, coordination among the implementing organizations, land acquisition problems, and timely implementation of highway projects. Officials deliberated about infrastructure development within the framework of the PM Gati Shakti program to ensure connectivity across India.
Conclusion
Through Chintan Shivir 2026, Nitin Gadkari laid down a forward-looking vision that moves beyond building additional road networks. The vision is centered on the development of safe, environmentally-friendly, technologically advanced and internationally competitive highways through effective planning and coordination.
As India makes big investments in its transport sector, the policy choices and future directions that will emerge from the conclave will be crucial in shaping the next generation of national highways.
