Will Board Exam Marks Get 50% Weightage for NEET and JEE Admissions? Here’s What We Know

A proposed education reform has led to a heated discussion between students, their parents, and coaching institutes in India. As per the latest reports, the Indian government has been looking into the possibility of introducing a proposal where the Class 12 board examination scores are considered for up to 50% of the admission score of the course that is usually held via entrance tests like NEET and JEE.

It will be one of the most drastic reforms in the medical and engineering admissions process in India since decades. But it needs to be noted that the above-mentioned proposal is still a proposition and has not been accepted or introduced by the government yet.

What Is the New Proposal?

This idea is put forward by a nine-member committee appointed by the Ministry of Education for an assessment of the examination system of India amid allegations of paper leakages, mistakes in evaluation process, increased tutoring industry, and stress associated with one-shot entrance examinations. 

As per the sources, the committee has recommended that board examination grades might account for 50% of the merit for admissions, whereas the remaining 50% might be derived from entrance examinations such as NEET and JEE. 

Currently, board examination marks are normally used only as eligibility criteria, whereas admissions are mainly made on the basis of entrance examination results.

Why Is the Government Considering This Change?

This proposal is one aspect of the overall strategy that aims at bringing down the level of over-reliance on the examination.

There have been various controversies related to exams like paper leaks and issues of unfairness. There has been some effort on the part of policymakers to ensure that the admission process becomes more balanced. In case the policy is ultimately adopted, it will be necessary for the candidates to pay equal attention to their board exams and competitive entrance exams.

Over the years, a large number of candidates have concentrated more on preparing themselves for NEET or JEE while giving less emphasis to their board exams, considering them as mere eligibility tests. With the weightage of 50 percent for the board exams, this strategy can get changed entirely.

This weightage can also encourage schools to prepare students for their competitive exams rather than relying on coaching centers.

Could There Be Challenges?

Despite many experts from the educational sector believing that this suggestion might help reduce exam pressure on students, several issues have been raised with it.

There are many education boards in India, namely CBSE, CISCE, and many state boards, with each board having its own syllabus, standards of evaluation, and marking schemes. It may not be easy to compare the results of different education boards.

A policy in the future may require a standardized approach.

What Should NEET and JEE Aspirants Do Now?

The students must refrain from altering their preparation approach only on the basis of the media reports.

Because the policy proposal has still not been approved, the existing admission procedure still holds. The aspirants must continue to prepare for the entrance examination as well as work towards scoring good marks in Class 12 boards.
