Meta to introduce ‘Facebook Protect’ in India
India – Certain accounts on Facebook are prone to being targeted more than others. This includes top journalists, leaders, politics or business persons. Keeping this in consideration, Meta, forley known as facebook, announced that it is planning on expanding Facebook Protect security program for such users.
These accounts have many followers and hence they often become an easy target by malicious hackers. The program was tested in 2018 in the United States for the first time and then slowly, people began increasing its use and the first time it was used in a big event was the 2020 US elections.
Now this program is all set to be used in 50 other countries including India by the end of this year. Social media outrage is a huge concern especially in India where most of the population has only recently started to get their hands comfortable on many of the online platforms.

But at present, the program is limited to a particular section of the users. Those who fall under this group will automatically find an option on the social media platform where they will be asked if they want to turn on the ‘Facebook Protect’ option to secure their personal id.
The software that is used by this is basically designed to protect accounts against cyberattacks. Through this program, the user will easily be able to turn on the two-factor authentication for their accounts, which according to the platform is a safer way to handle such accounts.
Meta Head of Security Policy Nathaniel Gleicher talked about the expansion which the company is aiming to do by the end of this year on Friday. “As part of our ongoing improvements to security, we’re expanding Facebook Protect, a program designed for people that are likely to be highly targeted by malicious hackers, including human rights defenders, journalists, and government officials,” she said.
