Maharashtra youth is the first from the state to get selected as a scientist at ISRO
Somnath Mali has been selected as a senior scientist at ISRO. He hails from Sarkoli village in Pandharpur Tehsil of Solapur district in Maharashtra. He is the first student from the state to secure a job at the Indian space agency.
The ceremony was held on June 2, where he was selected as a senior scientist at Vikram Sarabhai Space Center in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Previously, Somnath completed his completed Btech in mechanical engineering and is now pursuing mechanical design from IIT, Delhi.
Since childhood, he wasfascinated by ISRO and this led him to apply here in 2016. Unfortunately, he wasnot able to clear his written exams then however, in 2019, based on his MTechdegree, he applied for the job at ISRO and finally is now appointed here as a seniorscientist.

It was a proud moment for Somnath Mali’s parents when he became the firststudent from Maharashtra to be selected ISRO especially because he did hisschooling from a village and did not have all the means to study or experiment withhis choices. Facing all the hardships, he emerged strongly today.
He struggled since belonged to a poor background and from an underprivileged section of society, Somnath’s parents and brother worked as farmers and even as laborers to fundSomnath’s study. He was selected as a mechanical designer at the Indian Institutes of Technology(IIT) Delhi, securing 916th rank in the GATE exam.
And it was his time at IIT that gave him this life-changing opportunity and courage to pursue his long dream of being in ISRO. He will be joining the team of diligent scientists as an aircraft engine design.
