The Chinese Communist Party’s official mouthpiece, the Global Times has accused Indian hackers of targeting local hospitals and medical research institutions amid the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak in the country.
Calling India a ‘victim of cyberattacks undermining cybersecurity’, the state-run newspaper said a group called BITTER, with a suspected Indian background, had launched continuous APT attacks since March 2019 targeting China’s government agencies and Chinese organizations, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Chinese internet security company and tech giant 360 Security Technology announced yesterday that it had evidence of an advanced persistent threat (APT) attack launched by Indian hackers, who used the novel coronavirus as bait to target China’s medical institutes and research labs.
An advanced persistent threat (APT) attack is a stealthy campaign in which any hacker or a team of hackers successfully infiltrate a network so as to mine highly sensitive data.
The Global Times further reported that while India reported cyberattacks against its Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant and Indian Space Research Organization in 2019, it was “sorry to see a victim of cyberattacks undermine cybersecurity.”
The Chinese Communist Party’s official mouthpiece further claimed that the group’s main targets, as disclosed by the government in 2016, were government, the arms industry, and the nuclear industry.
