Maha Kumbh Mela begins in Prayagraj: Understanding different types of Kumbh Mela
The Maha Kumbh Mela started in Prayagraj on January 13, 2025. This religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh is highly significant for Hindu pilgrims from across the globe as it marks the completion of 12 Kumbh Mela cycles – occurring once in 144 years.
The UP authorities are expecting a footfall of more than 40 crore people for the Maha Kumbh Mela along the banks of Holy Ganges. This religious gathering represents a perfect blend of culture, tradition and spirituality.
Hindu mythology states that the origin of Kumbh Melas can be linked to Samudra Manthan or the churning of the cosmic ocean. Deities and demons assembled together to attain amrit or the nectar of immortality.
There are four different types of Kumbh: Kumbh Mela (occurring once in three years), Ardh or half Kumbh Mela (occurring once in six years), Purna or complete Kumbh Mela (occurring once in 12 years), and the Maha Kumbh Mela (occurring once in 144 years).
