Mid-Air Scare in Korean Air Flight – 26,900-Foot Drop Due to Pressurization Issue Passengers Use Oxygen Masks
A Korean Air flight had to make an emergency landing after a terrifying mid-flight incident where the plane dropped over 25,000 feet due to a pressurization system fault. Flight KE189, a Boeing 737 Max 8, left Seoul’s Incheon International Airport bound for Taichung International Airport in Taiwan on June 22, 2024, at approximately 4:45 PM local time.
Just 50 minutes into the flight, the plane began to descend rapidly, plummeting about 26,900 feet in 15 minutes. According to FL360aero, a warning indicating a “pressure system abnormality” appeared while the plane was over Jeju Island.
Passengers faced immediate distress, hyperventilation, and ear pain. Passengers used oxygen masks. One passenger described a chaotic scene to The Taipei Times, with children crying as the masks dropped from overhead compartments. Another noted the eerie calm among the flight attendants, who stayed seated, indicating something was wrong.
The flight landed in Taichung and after the landing 17 passengers were taken to medical facilities for evaluation but were released without major injuries.

Korean Air issued an apology, “We are fully cooperating with all relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. We have provided comprehensive support to affected passengers, including accommodation, meals, and transportation arrangements.”
After the incident, many passengers expressed their fear and reluctance to fly again soon.
After this horrible incident in the air Korean Air is investigating to identify the real cause and fix the pressurization system fault before the aircraft returns to service.
But Boeing is again under question as many Boeing flights are facing dangerous turbulence these days!
