Jyothi Yarraji Wins India’s First Gold Medal At 2023 Asian Athletics Championships
In the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships held in India, hurdler Jyothi Yarraji made headlines by winning India’s first gold medal of the tournament.
The championships took place at the National Stadium, and on the second day of the competition, Jyothi emerged as the star performer.
The day began with challenging weather conditions, as the athletes had to battle stifling heat during the morning session.
However, later in the evening, showers made it even more difficult for the athletes to maintain their grip on the track. Despite these challenges, Jyothi showcased her exceptional skills and determination.
In the women’s 100m hurdles event, Jyothi faced tough competition from Japanese athletes Asuka Terada and Masumi Aoki, as well as China’s Wu Yanni.
All four athletes had impressive performances throughout the year, with sub-13s timings. However, Wu Yanni was disqualified for a false start, leaving Jyothi to battle it out against the two Japanese competitors.
Although Jyothi had a slower start compared to her opponents, she gradually caught up and took the lead.
Despite a few minor mistakes at the last few hurdles, Jyothi maintained her composure and crossed the finish line in a time of 13.09 seconds, securing the gold medal.
Her victory marked India’s first gold medal at the championships, setting the stage for further triumphs.
On the same day, Indian athletes Ajay Kumar Saroj and Abdulla Aboobacker also claimed gold medals in the men’s 1500m and men’s triple jump events, respectively.
Their victories halted Japan’s dominance, as Japan managed to secure three more gold medals on that day.
