Is TCS Building ChatGPT-Like AI Generative Technology?
The Indian tech company TCS is developing indigenous generative artificial intelligence technology. Will it be similar to AI chatbot ChatGPT?
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest software services firm, is developing its own generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT for enterprise code generation.
The project aims to use TCS’s internal code, data, and resources to build a proprietary generative AI algorithm for code generation, using large language modeling functions.
TCS believes that using its own generative AI tool will enable it to provide secure and contextual AI solutions to its clients while retaining ownership of the intellectual property.
TCS is working on use cases for building proprietary generative AI algorithms for code generation, and the process still needs to mature further before rolling out solutions.
N Ganapathy Subramaniam, TCS’s chief operating officer, expects the firm to launch some of these solutions before the end of his tenure in May 2023.
TCS sees an opportunity to integrate its generative AI offering with its low-code software development platform, MasterCraft, to make it an intelligent low-code platform.
Subramaniam also sees a huge opportunity in creating new roles for “prompt engineers” within the organization who can effectively communicate contextual queries to large language models for enterprise requirements.
He believes that these roles will be critical and as important as having engineering, mathematical or analytical skills.
TCS has already built a number of internal use cases using generative AI solutions while working with global partners.
However, Subramaniam also notes that enterprise usage of generative AI solutions still requires fine tuning in terms of ownership and intellectual property of the end products.

The industry will also need to wait for regulations governing these solutions to mature further to realize the full potential of the technology.
