India Open: Lakshya Sen beats the world champion in the tournament
Lakshya Sen became the first Indian to win an Indian Open men’s singles title on their debut in the India Open tournament. He claimed the India Open Super 500 at Indira Gandhi (IG) Stadium on Sunday.
He beat Singaporean Loh Kean Yew in a thrilling final match. Loh Kean Yew won the title at the 2021 BWF World Championships. Lakshya Sen had earlier won bronze in the 2021 World Championships after losing to Srikanth in the semi-final.
Lakshya Sen raced to a 16-10 lead in the first game before Loh managed to fight back. The duo then exchanged match points before Lakshya ran out 24-22 victory. Lakshya Sen was the second Indian representative on the final day of the tournament. He also became the first opponent to hand Loh a defeat on the circuit, with a 24-22, 21-17 victory. In both the semis and finals, Sen was nervous at the finishing stages. However, he fought with confidence and won the match.

Reportedly, Sen pulled out of the Syed Modi International Super 300 tournament after feeling exhausted from the recent match. He has participated in back-to-back tournaments since October last year. He competed in nine tournaments since October last year. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also decided to withdraw from the Super 300 tournament.
The India Open got underway on January 11. Round two of the tournament commenced at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi. Earlier, the Covid-19 virus affected the India Open tournament as seven Indian players were tested positive for Covid-19. Subsequently, the players withdrew from the event. The BAI (Badminton Association of India) organised the 2022 edition of the India Open. It was held behind closed doors at the Indira Gandhi Stadium’s KD Jadhav Indoor Hall.
