India mourns the loss of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh died on December 26 at the age of 92 of age-related medical conditions in Delhi. He had a sudden loss of consciousness at home. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived. Doctors declared him dead at 9:51 pm.
Singh had been in poor health. He served as Finance Minister under then-Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. He is considered the architect of economic reforms that pulled India from the brink of bankruptcy and ushered in an era of economic liberalisation.

Incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the loss of one of India’s “most distinguished leaders”. He noted that the former PM served in different positions, leaving a strong imprint on the country’s economic policies.
“Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist,” PM Modi further mentioned. A member of the Indian National Congress, Singh became the first Sikh Prime Minister of India. He obtained his doctorate in economics from Oxford.
