Himachal Joins Gujarat In Bhagwat Gita Studies For Secondary Schools

Himachal government might be introducing the Bhagwat Gita into its curriculum in its secondary school curriculum in the state. This has been confirmed by the state Education Minister Govind Singh Thakur through a formal media announcement. With this, Himachal Pradesh will become the second saffron state after Gujarat to have taken on this step into its educational curriculum.
This was formally announced as a part of the inauguration ceremony of Divisional Office of Public Works Department at Padhar village in Darrang constituency in Mandi recently. Mr. Thakur stated here that, “CM Jai Ram Thakur has said that ‘Shrimad Bhagavad Gita’ will be taught to all school students from Class 9.”
Karnataka may also be in line for this development soon, but there is no confirmed information about this. While announcing the decision to in include Bhagwad Gita in the school curriculum, Gujarat Education Minister Jitu Vaghani had said, “To include Indian culture and knowledge system in school education from the academic year 2022-23, in the first phase, values and principles contained in Bhagavad Gita are being introduced in schools from classes 6-12 as per understanding and interest of children.”

This decision to make Bhagavad Gita comes in alignment with the Centre’s National Education Policy (NEP) that advocates imbibing ancient cultures as well modern traditions in the children from an early stage. Further, classes 6 to 8 would be made to study scripture in the textbook of ‘Sarvangi Shikshan’ (holistic education). From Classes 9 to 12, it will be introduced in the form of storytelling in the textbook of the first language,” he said.
Schools will also organise activities based on the scripture such as prayers, shloka recitation, comprehension, drama, quiz, painting and elocution competitions, he said. Study material such as books and audio-video CDs will be provided to schools by the government, the minister added.
