Heavy Snowfall Affects Himachal Pradesh: Over 500 Tourists Stranded, 223 Roads Closed
An intense snowfall has affected the activities in Himachal Pradesh by closing down 223 roads and stranding more than 500 tourists. This has been evidenced by the fact that the extreme weather conditions have in the recent 24 hours resulted in four deaths, others being seriously injured in accidents occasioned by vehicle slips on icy roads.
Some of the worst hit areas are the districts of Kinnaur, Lahaul & Spiti and the higher regions of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Chamba and Sirmaur. Highways serving the region, including three national highways linking Attari to Leh and Sanj-Aut in Kullu district, have been closed. Out of these reported closures, Shimla has registered 145 closures; Kullu and Mandi, 25 and 20 closures respectively.
It has been worsened by cases of power blackout where 356 transformers were Trip in the state. Manali and Shimla, which are famous tourist attractions, are suffering from acute traffic problems, as the State Emergency Operation Centre is dealing with the situation.
