Government Starts Multi-Modal Logistics Park Project Across India

The government of India has launched the 35 Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) project. Reliance is going to execute the first project at Chennai.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) is creating 35 Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) as part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP), which is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.

15 of the 35 MMLPs are given priority throughout the course of the following three years.

As part of this National Master Plan, MoRTH has achieved substantial progress. The first MMLP is being created on 184.27 acres in Mappedu, Chennai.

Prime Minister Modi laid the cornerstone for Reliance Industries Limited on May 26, 2022, and they have been given the contract.

In October 2021, the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan was introduced. It brings together 16 union ministries, including MoRTH, and is intended to increase last-mile connectivity and multimodal connectivity throughout the nation.

Additionally, National Logistics Policy (NLP), which concentrates on these 2 important areas –

Effective integration between various agencies in the logistics ecosystem and the deployment and adoption of newer technologies to smooth the process flow.

It was launched in 2022 in order to make the industry more effective and resilient.

The MMLPs by MoRTH lay the foundation for the execution of such large-scale projects in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode, for which both the central government and state governments have joined forces, while also setting the pace for the construction of a modern, multimodal infrastructure across the entire nation.

Additionally, National Highways Logistics Management Limited, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, Chennai Port Authority, and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation comprise a government Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV).

1,424 crore rupees is the project’s anticipated cost. 45 years make up the entire concession term.

With an estimated cost of Rs 104 crore, the SPV would build 5.4 km of 4-lane National Highway (NH) connectivity, and it will spend an additional Rs 217 crore to build 10.5 km of new rail siding to the MMLP site.

With an expected developer investment of Rs. 783 crore, the MMLP would be developed in three stages. By 2025, phase-one development should be completed, enabling commercial operations.

The southern region’s logistics hub will be MMLP Chennai, which is conveniently placed 52 km from Chennai Port, 80 km from Ennore Port, and 87 km from Kattupalli Airport.

In a 45-year timeframe, it is predicted to handle 7.17 million metric tons (MMT) of freight.
