Gold and Silver Prices Drop: Key Reasons Behind the Sharp Market Correction

Prices of gold and silver experienced a steep fall in India amid a price correction in international bullion markets on October 14, 2026. High US inflation, expectations of tightening of monetary policy, and the rupee movement led to the decrease in prices. But both the precious metals registered a rally on October 15 owing to re-evaluation by the investors of the market scenario.
The local benchmark prices stood at around ₹1,48,134 per 10 grams for 24-carat gold and ₹2,14,715 per kilogram for silver on October 15. Retail prices may vary in different cities and at different jewellers.
Why Did Gold and Silver Prices Fall?
US Inflation Rises; Interest Rate Concerns Increase
One of the reasons was the latest US inflation report. In September, consumer inflation rose to 3.7% year-on-year, exceeding the estimates of the market. The figure increased concerns that the US Federal Reserve might continue its restrictive monetary policy or increase the interest rates.
Gold and silver investments don’t yield any interest. Thus, when interest rates are raised or likely to be raised, investors tend to opt for interest yielding investments, which affects precious metals prices negatively.
Stronger Dollar and Bond Yields
Higher interest rates in the US can increase the value of the dollar while also increasing the bond yield. Being traded internationally in US dollars, gold and silver may become more expensive for people from other countries that trade in dollars, thus decreasing their demand.
Interest rate changes may also affect investment, especially when investors compare bullion with assets that provide income.
Silver Undergoes More Selling Pressure
A more severe drop took place among silver on this day of correction. Silver is much more widely used in industry than gold, being employed in electronic, solar, and electrical equipment. This makes silver prices sensitive to not only investment demand but also industrial outlooks.
Market uncertainty, interest rates issues, and profits taking led to increased silver selling pressure and, hence, made the metal undergo a more severe drop than gold on October 14.
Why Did Prices Recover on October 15?
Gold and silver managed to recover in the international markets on Thursday amid three days in a row of losses. Lower oil prices and new dynamics of US dollar and Treasury yields helped. Still, uncertainties about US inflation and next Fed decision were having an impact on sentiment.
A recovery doesn’t mean that the correction is over yet. Prices could be volatile due to reactions to macroeconomic reports and changes in interest rate expectations.
What Should Buyers and Investors Pay Attention To?
For jewelry consumers, lower prices could be a chance to benefit, but local rates, taxes and making fees influence the final price of the deal. It’s unwise for investors to make any decisions basing on the daily movement.
The short-term dynamics of precious metals will be determined by the data about inflation, Fed messages, currencies and demand. After the recent correction, market participants will observe whether the recovery gains strength or there would be new selling pressure.
