EPFO September ECR Filing Deadline Today: Final Reminder for Employers to Submit Data

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has cautioned employers to get their ECR filing and deposit of statutory provident fund contribution done for the month of September 2026 before October 31. This is the last day for which the extension period has been granted, providing establishments an additional chance to do their pending compliance work.
October 15 was the initial date; however, due to the changes made in the provident fund wage ceiling, it has now been extended by EPFO.
Why Did EPFO Extend the September ECR Deadline?
EPFO released an amendment dated October 13, 2026, on the extension of the deadline for filing ECRs for the month of September 2026 from September 30 to October 31, due to the increase in the statutory cap of monthly contribution limit of PF wages from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 with effect from September 17, 2026.
This amendment came into effect amid issues faced by many establishments during the implementation of changes within the prescribed period.
It allows additional time to settle all employee-wise records and statutory contribution.
But this relief is applicable only to the wage month of September 2026.
What Is ECR Filing and Why Is It Important?
Electronic Challan-Cum-Return is a mandatory filing of returns on a monthly basis, whereby the employer reports the wage amount and the amount of contributions made on behalf of each employee.
It includes contributions made under the following three important social security schemes:
- Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF): It helps in the retirement savings of the employees through contributions.
- Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS): It provides the pension to eligible employees.
- Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI): This provides insurance coverage to eligible employees in case of death in the service of an employer.
How Can Employers File September 2026 ECR?
Employers can file the return using the EPFO Employer Unified Portal.
The process involves:
- Login into the official EPFO employer portal using the establishment’s credentials.
- Go to the ECR/return filing page.
- Choose the month of September 2026 as the wage month.
- Provide the details about employees‘ contributions in the given format.
- Check the entered information and make corrections.
- Prepare the challan for the payment after validation.
- Pay the required statutory contribution and save the receipt.
Employers should check employees’ information, eligible wages, and contributions.
What Happens If Employers Miss the Deadline?
Late submissions of statutory payments within the designated period may lead to compliance action through the payment of interest and damages.
It is thus advisable for employers to submit their information early enough without waiting for the last minute, especially when the portal is congested or facing some problems.
What Should Employees Check?
However, even though the ECR is the responsibility of the employer to file, the employee can check his EPF passbook to see if the contributions made in September have been reflected in the passbook.
In case the contribution has still not been made even after the process has been completed by the employer, the employee should approach the payroll department.
As 31st October is the last date to do that, the employer should focus on filing the September ECRs to avoid any trouble.
