The incident has led to a row in Punjab which is not a predominantly BJP held state. The Supreme Court later directed the state government to ensure that all records and materials pertaining to the PM’s movements be immediately secured in the custody of the registrar-general of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Apparently, travel records are supposed to be checked with a fine toothcomb. The matter should not be seen into until January 10, it is said. The court has taken great seriousness into the matter and also directed, the Punjab Police, the Special Protection Group (SPG), and other central and state agencies to provide necessary assistance to the registrar-general, who will be accountable for the safekeeping of the travel records.
The director-general of police (DGP) of Chandigarh and an official of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will also act as nodal officers to coordinate with the registrar-general, the apex court said. It was also made clear that both the committees set up by the Centre and the Punjab government to probe the incident will halt their inquiries till Monday (January 10), when the public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by Lawyer Voice is to be taken up next.
In response, Punjab CM has been forced to make a call to the bigwig in Congress, seeking advice into tackling the matter, which has Congress on the firing line. The convoy was halted by farmers protesting, confirmed reports state. Meanwhile, the lot in Punjab is wondering as to why the PM did not use his helipad which would have let the farmers protest in peace?
