Bid to strengthen healthcare infrastructure: PM Modi launches Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission

Delhi -Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, one of largest Indian schemes, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a bid to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the country. On Monday, the mission was launched from Mr. Modi’s parliamentary constituency Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission is in addition to the National Health Mission, another pan-India scheme for bolstering healthcare in India.

Various other development projects were also launched for the constituency, coming of over Rs 5,200 crore worth.

“Those whose governments remained in the country for a long time, instead of the all-around development of the country’s healthcare system, kept it deprived of facilities. The PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission aims to tackle this deficiency,” Modi said.

The streamlined objective of the mission is to bolster health infrastructure in India while filling in the gaps specifically in critical care facilities and primary care in rural as well as urban areas. The mission will deliver support to 17,788 rural health and wellness centres in 10 focused states. Additionally, 11,024 urban wellness and health centres will be created across states. This will also enable access to critical care services to all districts in India with population of over 5 lakh via exclusive hospital blocks rendering critical care. Remaining districts would be serviced through referrals.

The mission will ensure all people have access to a complete range of diagnostic services in public healthcare model through a laboratories network that will offer services across India.

The Pradhan Mantri mission would also include setting up of a national institution for one health, four new national institutes for virology, a regional research platform for WHO southeast Asia Region, nine biosafety level-III laboratories, and five new regional national centres for disease control.

Earlier on Monday, PM had also inaugurated nine medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh through a virtual ceremony. The colleges are located in Siddharthnagar, Etah, Hardoi, Pratapgarh, Fatehpur, Deoria, Ghazipur, Mirzapur and Jaunpur districts, and have cost Rs. 2,329 crore.
