Let’s Roll On MLS’s past
Men’s professional football, or football as it is known in the United States, is governed by Major League Soccer (MLS), which is recognized by the USSF. Since the start of the 2023 season, the MLS has 29 teams—26 in the United States and three in Canada—making it the top level of American football.
The inaugural season featured 10 teams and was started in 1993 as a component of the USA’s successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994. The North American Soccer League (NASL), which ran from 1968 to 1984, succeeded it.
Each team plays 34 games during an MLS season, which starts in late February or early March and lasts until mid-October. The Supporter’s Shield is given to the team with the best record. The postseason MLS Cup playoffs feature 18 teams, and the league’s championship game, the MLS Cup, where two teams compete for the ultimate title of champion, takes place at the end of the season.
The Eastern and Western Conferences in Major League Soccer each have teams that play 34 games. In 2023, each of the 29 teams will play two games (at home and away) against every opponent in its conference and one game against every team in the opposing conference, with the exception of four or five.
The teams take a break in the middle of the season to participate in the All-Star Game, an exhibition game featuring the top players in the league.
