What Went Wrong with Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency Movie of Indira Gandhi?

The film rushes through Indira Gandhi’s early life and continues this hurried, superficial treatment throughout. This approach suggests there’s a mix of fiction in its skewed portrayal of her life. The film even takes wild creative liberties like showing political figures such as Jayaprakash Narayan and Atal Bihari Vajpayee suddenly breaking into song which feels out of place.
Indira is depicted as a giggly, ineffective character lacking the strength that defined her in real life. There’s more drama than historical accuracy in Emergency and you can tell the actors are uncomfortable portraying such well-known figures. The cinematography should have enhanced the film but instead, it feels constrained by a disorganized production.
The execution often falters leading to moments that unintentionally come off as funny. Overall, Emergency shows how not to make a biographical drama struggling to balance its ambitious storyline with effective storytelling.
