The Telugu film “Virupaksha,” directed by Karthik Dandu and starring Sai Dharam Tej and Samyuktha Menon, has made its way to the OTT (Over-The-Top) platform after a successful theatrical run.
The film, which was released on April 21, garnered positive responses and grossed over Rs 100 crore at the box office.
“Virupaksha” provided a much-needed respite to the Telugu film industry amidst a series of box office disappointments in April.
Directed by Karthik Dandu, known for his previous work in “Bham Bholenath,” the supernatural thriller features Sai Dharam Tej, Samyuktha Menon, Sai Chand, Ajay, Sunil, and others in key roles.
Produced by Bvsn Prasad under Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra, the film gained immense popularity, leading to its dubbing and release in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam.
The film’s success prompted Netflix to acquire the post-theatrical streaming rights for “Virupaksha,” and it premiered on the platform on May 21.
The film’s captivating screenplay and adherence to the story’s essence without compromising for commercial appeal were praised.
Despite receiving an ‘A’ certificate from the censors, the film attracted a wide range of audiences, spanning various age groups, and its financial prospects remained unaffected.
“Virupaksha” revolves around the protagonist Surya (played by Sai Dharam Tej) and his visit to his ancestral village Rudravanam, where he falls for Nandini (played by Samyuktha Menon).
As a series of deaths shock the village, the temple head declares a lockdown for eight days, prohibiting anyone from entering or leaving. Surya takes it upon himself to uncover the truth behind these deaths.
OTTplay’s reviewer described “Virupaksha” as a refreshing departure from the usual commercial films in Telugu cinema.
With its intriguing storyline, captivating music score, and engaging narration, the film grabbed audience attention & appreciation.
