London – Shoojit Sarcar directed Sardar Uddham is set to release on Amazon Prime Video on October 16. Actor Vicky Kaushal is all geared up for the release in which he is playing the protagonist revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh. Sardar Udham is best known to assassinate Michael O’Dwyer in London to take revenge for Amritsar’s Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919.

Kaushal posted a still of himself from the movie on Instagram ahead of the release, unveiling the look of Udham Singh when he was in prison – rugged face with a scar on the forehead. Kaushal captioned the picture by explaining the story of a revolutionary freedom fighter. He wrote, “1931, Prison, India. Udham Singh was in prison for possession of prohibited papers “Ghadr-i-Gunj” (“Voice of Revolt”). He was released later but under constant surveillance. Soon, he escaped to Europe and never got to return to India. #SardarUdham #SardarUdhamOnPrime | Oct 16.”

Kaushal shared his hope that Sarcar’s film will apprise people of the lesser-known freedom fighter. At the trailer launch of the film, Kaushal said, “Sardar Udham Singh and many other people who gave their lives for our freedom struggle get lost in a line, paragraph or a page in our history books. Sardar Udham Singh was probably that one line, paragraph or a page in the book.” He added, “But because I had heard his stories from my grandparents and parents, there was always this connection straight from my core where I related to that man. I related to his angst.”

The film is produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar, with music composed by Shantanu Moitra. The production company are Rising Sun Films. The other actors in pivotal roles are Banita Sandhu, Amol Parashar, Stephen Hogan and Shaun Scott.

Director Shoojit Sarcar defended his decision of releasing the film on OTT rather than waiting for theatre release by saying, “It’s a tricky question. There’s a destiny for every film and ‘Sardar Udham’ landed with Amazon Prime. When I shot the film, this wasn’t the situation. We shot the film for cinemas. However, I do not feel guilty that it’s releasing on (Amazon Prime Video).”
