Uttar Pradesh Polls: One Minister And Four MLAs Resign From BJP

Uttar Pradesh -All the political parties have stepped up their game ahead of the Uttar Pradesh (UP) election. In a massive blow to the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and Yogi Adityanath just before the UP election, a minister and three MLAs quit the BJP party. They joined the Samajwadi Party.

Swami Prasad Maurya, a top minister in the BJP government, posted his resignation letter on his Twitter account. Maurya wrote in the letter, “I worked with dedication in the Yogi Adityanath cabinet. But because of the grave oppression of Dalits, OBCs, farmers, unemployed and small businessmen, I am resigning.” Subsequently,  MLAs, Roshan Lal Verma, Brijesh Prajapati, and Bhagwati Sagar also announced their resignations. This is a major embarrassment for the BJP government as the UP election is just around the corner.

According to a report by NDTV, Maurya said, “What impact my exit will have on the BJP will be obvious after the 2022 assembly election.” Maurya, a powerful OBC (Other Backward Class) leader and five-time MLA said that he was upset because of the treatment Dalits and weaker sections of society were getting.

However, reports claimed he was upset because his son Utkarsh Maurya had not been “suitably accommodated” in the Yogi Adityanath government. The Samajwadi Party chief, Akhilesh Yadav tweeted a photograph with Maurya. Akhilesh Yadav has been seen visiting temples ahead of the UP election. Recently, he claimed that Lord Krishna came to his dreams to tell him that he would form the government in UP.

Swami Prasad Maurya was once one of the senior-most leaders in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). However, he left the BSP and joined the BJP just before the 2017 Assembly elections. He won the Padrauna seat on a BJP ticket in 2017. Subsequently, he was made Labour Minister.

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly election is a different game for both the BJP and its rivals. The BJP won the two consecutive Lok Sabha elections by pitching Narendra Modi as its face.
