Tirupati Temple Tragedy: 6 Killed, Over 40 Injured in Shocking Stampede
A terrible stampede at the Tirupati temple which is one of the nation’s most important houses of worship left six people dead and 40 others injured. On Wednesday night of January 8th the stampede took place. The accident happened while worshippers from all across the nation were congregating at the temple for the 10-day Vaikuntha Dwara Darshanam festival which starts this Friday. Witnesses stated that the stampede was caused by a rapid surge among devotees that descended into chaos. Officials from the Tirumala Turupati Devasthanamas TTD acknowledged the number of dead and injured and offered their condolenses to the families of the victims.
Approximately 4,000 devotees were waiting in line on Wednesday night for special darshan tokens. According to numerous media accounts, a woman devotee who is now known as Mallika unexpectedly became ill while she was in line. There was a line in Bairagipatteda Park for one of the token counters.
To transport Mallika to the hospital, the gates were opened. However the actions taken to get one woman to the hospital unintentionally caused a stampede. The gate was opened and the crowd hurried forward taking advantage of this. The temple officials on the scene got pushed aside by the unexpected influx of thousands of worshipers.
Six persons were killed in the stampede that was started by the enormous crowd of thousands of people. Among the deceased was Mallika, the woman whose evacuation the gates were opened for.
