The Tamil Nadu Government issues the Cash Price of ₹5 Crore to the Youngest Chess Champion of India
The 18-year old chess master, Gukesh Dommaraju etched a historical record by becoming the youngest Chess Grandmaster defeating the previous record of the Russian Grandmaster Gary Kasparov who won at the age of 22 in 1985. He defeated the Chinese defending chess master Ding at FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 in Singapore.
Stroke of Genius of Gukesh
It was a pressurised and a close-neck game between Gukesh and Ding during the 14th game, Gukesh sealed his prestigious World Chess Championship title by defeating the equally spirited Ding. Gukesh became more emotional and he said that he wasn’t expecting that position. With this remarkable accomplishment Gukesh becomes the second Indian to win the World Championship Title after the five time champion Viswanathan Anand.
Many iconic personalities including PM Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, Sachin Tendulkar, Tamil Nadu CM Stalin and the sports minister of Tamil Nadu conveyed their heartfelt wishes to the Grand Master Gukesh on their X accounts.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K.Stalin met Gukesh on Friday and announced the cash prize money of ₹5 crore to honour his achievement.
“We are immensely proud that Gukesh, a distinguished player in SDAT’s ELITE Players scheme, continues to bring home consistent victories in international chess tournaments.
His success not only makes our country proud but also shines a spotlight on Tamil Nadu.” – Deputy CM & Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, Udhayanidhi Stalin.
Previously, during this game each win during the game is awarded with $200,000 and by winning three games (3,11 & 14) Gukesh bagged $600,000. In the end, he bagged $1.35 million of earnings by winning the title of World Chess Champion, which is around ₹11.45 Crore in Indian money.
