Thala Returns! Dhoni Scripts History as CSK Captain Against KKR

MS Dhoni one of the greatest players of cricket history who is part of CSK has added another milestone to his incredible IPL journey. During the 2025 match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Chepauk, Dhoni returned as captain of CSK, stepping in for Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is out due to a minor elbow fracture.
With this match, Dhoni broke two major records in the Indian Premier League.
First, he became the first ‘uncapped player’ to captain a team in IPL history. Although Dhoni has played more than 500 international matches, a new BCCI rule defines players as “uncapped” if they haven’t played international cricket in the last five years. Since Dhoni hasn’t played for India since 2020, he now officially falls into that category.
Second, Dhoni also became the oldest captain in IPL history at the age of 43, breaking his own previous record from 2023 when he was 41.
CSK’s head coach Stephen Fleming praised Dhoni, saying he didn’t think twice about taking up the captain’s role again.
“He stepped up right away when we knew Ruturaj was ruled out for the season,” said Fleming. “We’ll now look within our squad for options, but Dhoni’s leadership will guide us through.”
Once again, MS Dhoni proves that age is just a number and that legends never truly step away from the game.
