Shohely Akhter’s Downfall: Why is the controversy trending in India?
The global attention of cricket fans has now turned towards the controversy around the Bangladeshi women cricketer Shohely Akhter who is accused of breaching the anti-corruption code. But it might be surprising for few that the controversy is trending in India.. that is because India has the largest number of fans for cricket and they garner the updates of all forms of cricket and the individual players.
It was a shocking moment for the followers of women’s cricket when Shohely Akhter was banned for five years from all forms of cricket and she became the first woman cricketer to be banned by ICC ever.
What is the Sensational Controversy?
According to information that traces a year ago in 2023 February, Shohely had approached her fellow team player who is under the category of “Player A” before the match against Australia via Facebook Messenger. Following that, Akhter had requested the fellow teammate to get out hit wicket for which she offered 2 million Bangladeshi Taka, the money which would be from an illegal betting by her cousin. The fellow player turned down her offer and reported this incident to ACU (Anti-Corruption Unit) by submitting all evidence she had. Meanwhile, Shohely had deleted all those messages from her end.
Disciplinary Actions of ICC
As a part of the disciplinary actions, ICC decided to ban Akhter from all the three formats of cricket. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges to maintain the integrity within the sport and report the mechanisms to combat corruption in cricket.
