Shastri Backs KL Rahul as India’s Opening Choice for Adelaide Test Against Australia
The second Test of the Border Gavaskar trophy has posed a potential opening batting dilemma in front of the Indian cricket team. As the new day-night encounter at Adelaide approaches, ex-India coach Ravi Shastri has come up with a definitive view of India’s batting approach. He suggests sticking with KL Rahul as an opener because Rohit Sharma has not had match practice since arriving in Australia.
As we have seen in the Perth Test, KL Rahul has done a good job of making the Australian bowlers toil for the runs during his stay at the crease. This batsman demonstrated his techniques against a spicy wicket which has made cricket analysts such as Shastri urge selectors to retain this player in the upper order. Rahul’s body language and his skills in handling tough conditions have been topics of discussion in the run-up to the Adelaide Test.
The possible addition of Rohit Sharma makes it even more difficult to predict the Indian batting lineup. Shastri said Sharma should come at number five or six and that could mean Rahul stays put at the top of the innings. The return of Shubman Gill into the squad after he missed the last Test match because of a hand injury will be a plus for Indian batting and there is more freedom that the team management can use.
