Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, India’s top men’s doubles pair, wrote a new history by assuring India’s first men’s doubles medal at the Badminton Asia Championships after 52 years.
They seized this achievement by defeating Indonesia’s veteran duo players – Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
However, the Indian duo won the match with a score of 21-11 21-12 and now they are going to face Tokyo Olympic gold medalists Lee Yang and Wang Chi Lin of Taiwan in the semifinals.
After the match, Satwik and Chirag praised the players Ahsan and Setiawan, whom they consider their idols in their career.
The Indian duo said that they have been following the Indonesian pair since they were young and they learned a lot about badminton by watching their performances on the court.
Satwik also stated that playing against senior players like Ahsan and Setiawan can be challenging, as they can come back at any time with their mindset, so they focus and enjoy every point.
Chirag also spoke about their strategy for the match, which was to focus on the service receiving as the Indonesian pair is strong at it.
The Indian duo executed their strategy well and dominated the match from the start, not allowing their opponents to make a comeback.
Chirag acknowledged the significance of their achievement but stated that their job is still not done. He added that they played some really good badminton and will face Chinese Taipei’s Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin in the semifinals.
