Wednesday was nothing short of iconic for the football fans all over the world as one of the greatest players of all time Cristiano Ronaldo broke a world record set by another great player of the sport–Ali Daei.
Not only Ronaldo managed to takes his team through to the qualifiers for the World Cup, but he also set a new world record by breaking Ali Daei’s world record of the most international goals as he surpassed a tally of 109 goals. Six minutes to the stoppage time, the footballer again scored a goal to take his tally to 111 in 180 games.
“I’m very happy, not only because I beat the record but for the special moments that we had, Ronaldo said after the feat. He also added that the last-minute goals are very tough and he appreciates what the team did a lot. We believed until the end,” he added.
With this, Portugal sits at the top with 10 points in group A. Second in the group is Serbia, who are yet to have their last game for the qualifiers, with three points behind them. The winners of the group will automatically qualify for the finals in Qatar scheduled for 2022.
Ireland had a disappointing run this tournament, being second last in the group. The country only sits above Azerbaijan after three defeats which include their defeat in their homeland against Luxembourg.
As for the Portuguese forward, the footballer has recently signed with Manchester United and impressed football experts with his decision. For this match, however, he had a slow start and things were not working in his favor after he missed a penalty opportunity in the 15th minute.
Ireland took the lead in the 45th minute and it was not until the last few minutes that Ronaldo could regain control of the game.
