Report: India Urges Citizens To Leave Niger
Indian residents in Niger have been urged to leave the West African nation due to the rising violence brought on by the military coup last month.
According to official statistics, there are currently 250 Indians residing in Niger, where the coup has sparked widespread unrest and violence. Many European nations have evacuated their citizens from the unrest-ridden country that is currently governed by a military junta.
Travelers to Niger should postpone their plans until things return to normal, the foreign ministry advised in a warning.
According to Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, the government is closely monitoring the events in Niger.
Indian nationals whose presence is not necessary are advised to leave the country as soon as possible in light of the current situation, he said on Friday.
Mr. Bagchi reminded travelers that the airspace was closed and advised caution when leaving through the land border. He also urged all Indians living in Niger to register with the embassy.
He claimed that the Indian residents of Niger are in contact with the embassy there, which is assisting them in leaving the nation. Additionally, he provided the embassy’s emergency phone number (+227 9975 9975) in case anyone needed help.
Mr. Bagchi told us: “We’ve been told that all of the Indians are safe”.
More about the condition of Niger
After General Abdourahmane Tchiani overthrew and imprisoned President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, a crucial ally of the West in battling Islamist militancy in West Africa, violence erupted throughout the country.
The head of the Presidential Guard publicly proclaimed himself the leader of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland on television, supported by strong army generals.
The military takeover has been denounced by the United Nations, European Union, and African Union.
Following its neighbors Mali, Guinea, Chad, and Burkina Faso, Niger is the fifth nation in Africa to witness a couple in less than three years. Since the country gained independence in 1960, there have been four coup attempts.
